EBA guidelines to expected credit lossess

In July 2016, the EBA (European Banking Authority) issued draft guidelines on credit risk management practices and accounting for expected losses. These are based on guidelines published in December 2015 by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS 356). In its comments, GBIC criticises the fact that some of the EBA’s proposals go much further than the requirements of IFRS 9. It would make better sense, in GBIC’s view, to apply a more principles-based approach which took greater account of banks’ specificities and business models.
